And on the twenty-fourth day of this month the sons of Israel were assembled in fasting and in sackcloths
And the sons of Israel separated themselves from every foreign son, and they stood and confessed their sins and the lawless deeds of their fathers
And they stood in their station and read in the book of the law of the Lord their God, and they were confessing to the Lord and bowing down to the Lord their God.
And Jeshua and the sons of Kadmiel, Shecaniah son of Sarabiah, sons of Hanan, stood on the stairway of the Levites, and they cried out with a loud voice to the Lord their God.
And the Levites, Jesus and Kadmiel, said, Stand up, bless the Lord your God from everlasting and unto everlasting; and they shall bless the name of your glory and shall exalt it above all blessing and praise.
And Esdras said: You are yourself, Lord, you alone; you made the heaven and the heaven of the heaven and all their host, the earth and all that is in it, the seas and all that are in them, and you give life to all things, and to you the armies of the heavens worship
You are the Lord God; you chose Abram and brought him out from the land of the Chaldeans and put on him the name Abraham.
And you found his heart faithful before you, and you made a covenant with him to give to him the land of the Canaanites and Hittites and Amorrites and Perizzites and Jebusites and Girgashites, and to his seed; and you established your words, for you are righteous.
And you saw the humiliation of our fathers in Egypt, and you heard their cry by the Red Sea
And you gave signs in Egypt, in Pharaoh and in all his servants and in all the people of his land, because you knew that they acted proudly against them, and you made for yourself a name, as it is this day.
And you split the sea before them, and they passed through the midst of the sea on dry ground, and you cast those who pursued them into the depths, like a stone into strong water.
and in a pillar of cloud you guided them by day, and in a pillar of fire by night, to give light to them on the way in which they should walk in it
And upon Mount Sinai you came down and spoke to them from heaven, and you gave them upright judgments and laws of truth, good ordinances and commandments.
And your holy sabbath you made known to them, commandments and ordinances and law you commanded them by the hand of Moses your servant
And bread from heaven you gave them for their hunger, and water from a rock you brought out for them for their thirst, and you said to them to enter to inherit the land on which you stretched out your hand to give it to them.
And they and our fathers acted proudly and hardened their neck and did not listen to your commandments
And they refused to listen, and they did not remember your wonders which you did among them, and they hardened their neck, and they appointed a head to return to their bondage in Egypt. And you, God, merciful and compassionate, long-suffering and very merciful, did not forsake them.
And they even made for themselves a molten calf, and said, These are the gods who brought us out of Egypt, and they committed great provocations
And you, in your many compassions, did not forsake them in the wilderness; the pillar of cloud you did not turn away from them by day, to lead them on the way, and the pillar of fire by night, to give them light on the way in which they would walk in it.
And your good spirit you gave to instruct them, and your manna you did not withhold from their mouth, and water you gave to them for their thirst
And you nourished them forty years in the wilderness; their garments did not fail, and their feet did not wear out.
And you gave them kingdoms and peoples, and you divided them to them, and they inherited the land of Sihon king of Heshbon and the land of Og king of Bashan
And you multiplied their sons as the stars of heaven, and you brought them into the land which you said to their fathers, and they inherited it.
And you destroyed before them those who were dwelling in the land of the Canaanites, and you gave them into their hands, and their kings and the peoples of the land, to do to them as was pleasing before them
And they captured high cities and inherited houses full of all good things, hewn cisterns, vineyards and olive groves, and every tree for food in abundance; and they ate and were filled and grew fat and luxuriated in your great goodness.
And they changed and turned away from you and threw your law behind their body, and your prophets they killed, who testified among them to turn them back to you, and they committed great provocations.
and you gave them into the hand of those afflicting them, and they afflicted them, and they cried out to you in the time of their affliction, and you heard from your heaven and in your great compassions you gave them saviors and saved them from the hand of those afflicting them
And when they had rested, they turned back to do evil before you, and you abandoned them into the hands of their enemies, and they ruled over them; and again they cried out to you, and you heard from heaven and rescued them in your many compassions.
And I testified to them to turn them back to your law, and they did not listen, but in your commandments and in your judgments they sinned; which if a man should do them, he shall live by them; and they gave a disobedient back and hardened their neck, and they did not listen
And you drew out over them many years and bore witness to them by your Spirit by the hand of your prophets, and they did not give ear, and you gave them into the hand of the peoples of the land
And you, in your many compassions, did not make a full end of them, and you did not forsake them, because you are strong and merciful and compassionate.
And now, our God, the mighty, the great, the strong, and the awesome, keeping your covenant and your mercy, let all the trouble that has found us and our kings and our rulers and our priests and our prophets and our fathers and in all your people from the days of the kings of Asshur until this day not seem little before you.
And you are righteous concerning all the things that come upon us, because you did truth, and we have sinned.
And our kings and our rulers and our priests and our fathers did not do your law, and they did not pay heed to your commandments and to your testimonies which you testified to them
And they, in your kingdom and in your great goodness which you gave them, and in the broad and fertile land which you gave before them, did not serve you, and did not turn away from their evil practices
Behold, we are today slaves, and the land that you gave to our fathers to eat its fruit
to the kings whom you gave over us because of our sins, and over our bodies they rule, and over our cattle as is pleasing to them, and we are in great affliction
